CORSET BUSKS
Corset Busks are the traditional closures found at the center front of well made corsets. Historically busks, or buscs, were made in several varieties. There were wooden busks, narrow busks, wide busks, and spoon busks.
Wooden Busks were used during the late 15th Century / 16th Century to keep the front of early corsets rigid. These busks were sometimes made of horn or whalebone as well; they were usually thicker at the top and would taper toward the bottom. Quite often these early corset busks would be ornately decorated and would be laced into the corset in such a way that it was easily removable.
The Spoon Busk began to appear in 1873. This shaped busk was narrow at the top and widened into a pear shape at the base. Today these busks are very difficult to find, however they are worth the search as they give a very unique and historically accurate silhouette to your corset.
